Phonophoresis

Phonophoresis is ultrasound therapy combined with medication gel for the purpose of decreasing inflammation

JUPITER PHONOPHORESIS

Ultrasound gel and medication is applied to the skin, and the waves of the ultrasound help pass the medication to the injured body part, through the skin to assist with decreasing pain and/or inflammation.

COMMON INJURIES TREATED WITH PHONOPHORESIS

Inflammation in tendons, ligaments, muscles, and other soft tissues in the body can be very painful, although it is part of a natural healing process in the body after an injury has occurred. Phonophoresis is an anti-inflammatory treatment. Symptoms that indicate this may be a good treatment option include swelling, redness, pain, and increased temperature on the part of the body that’s inflamed.

Common injuries treated with phonophoresis include:

  • Arthritis

  • Adhesive capsulitis aka frozen shoulder

  • Bursitis

  • Tendonitis (most frequently tennis elbow, golfer’s elbow, and patellar tendinitis

We use a wide range of treatment modalities at Physiocare, like Phonophoresis.

When phonophoresis is applied, the types of medications that may be used include salicylates, dexamethasone, hydrocortisone, and lidocaine. Even when applied to the skin, some of these medications may carry risks and have side effects so they must be prescribed by your doctor. Your doctor will give you a prescription for the medication that you will fill at your pharmacy and bring with your to physical therapy.
