INTRODUCTION
Originally referred as muscular rheumatism or
fibrositis. Fibromyalgia was first recognized by the American
Medical Association as a true illness and the cause of disability
in 1987. In an article the same year, in the Journal of the
American Medical Association, a physician named Dr. Don Goldenberg
called the syndrome Fibromyalgia.
WHAT IS FIBROMYALGIA
Fibromyalgia is a chronic condition characterized by widespread
pain in your muscles, ligaments and tendons, as well as fatigue and
multiple tender points — places on your body where slight pressure
causes pain. Fibromyalgia is more common in women than
CAUSES/SYMPTOMS
Fibromyalgia can, but does not always, start as a result
of some trauma (such as an auto accident), major surgery, or
disease. Some evidence shows that Lyme Disease is a common trigger
of fibromyalgia symptoms. Research is unclear as to why and what
exactly triggers fibromyalgia, however the following factors may
contribute to the onset of fibromyalgia. Sleep disturbances, Injury
or trauma, particularly in the upper spinal region.
Infections, Abnormalities of the autonomic (sympathetic) nervous
system. Changes in muscle metabolism; reconditioning and decreased
blood flow to muscles may contribute to decreased strength and
fatigue. And psychological stress and hormonal changes also
may be possible causes of fibromyalgia.
WHO IS AT RISK
Women are more at risk then men. People in their early
to middle adulthood are more prone to develop fibromyalgia. Those
who have sleep disorders have an increased risk to develop
fibromyalgia. Family history of a relative with the condition. And
rheumatic disease, such as rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, or
ankylosing spondylitis, may put you at higher risk.
TRADTIONAL TREATMENTS
As with many other disorders, there is no universal cure for
fibromyalgia. Traditionally, low doses of sedating antidepressants
(e.g. amitriptyline and trazodone) have been used to reduce the
sleep disturbances that are associated with fibromyalgia, which are
believed by some practitioners to exacerbate the symptoms of the
disorder, The newest drug for treating the extreme pain of
Fibromyalgia is Lyrica, pregabalin, originally used for the nerve
pain suffered by diabetics.
A holistic approach — {including managing diet,
sleep, stress, pain as well as including physical activity}— is
used by many patients. Physical therapy, massage, healthy diet,
managing blood sugar levels, and avoiding known triggers when
possible are things that you can do to calm and control the symptoms of Fibromyalgis.

COMMENTS
We treat fibromyalgia with Craniosacral
Therapy. This is a form of body work that uses gentle touch to
palpate the rhythmic movement of the craniosacral system throughout the body to locate restrictions in mobility and determine the
origin of symptoms and release restrictions that facilitate and
increase mobility, function and health. Treatments include using
gentle massage, relaxation techniques, therapeutic exercises to
increase flexibility and muscle strength, endurance, posture,
modalities for pain control; moist heat, ultra sound and electric
stimulation.
