Why should you try Physical Therapy first? Let's
first look at the definition of physical therapy; It is the
art and science of assessing and restoring motion (motion of a
particular joint or body part or a particular movement pattern).
Physical Therapy is the only profession that can do that.
Why try PT first?
Supports traditional medicine rather than
substituting or replacing it.
PT is conservative, and non-invasive.
Prescription and OTC (over the counter) drugs may
reduce pain and inflammation but often have unwanted long term side
effects.
Generally the only "side effects" of this form of pain relief
are improved function and a feeling of well being.
- Restores motion, increases mobility.
- Decreases pain.
No waiting which promotes loss of function.
Health Insurance Companies have guidelines and
restrictions on your health care but, you have a choice on
who you choose and how you choose to be treated and cared for.
The Physical Therapists will conduct a comprehensive
evaluation and assessment to determine what treatment approach is appropriate for
the patient. If for example you experience back pain with
radiating pain into your legs the treatment approach would be the
same whether or not an MRI confirmed a disc herniation. The initial
focus of that treatment plan will be the same: to decrease acute
pain, restore normal joint and myofascial mobility in the area and
decrease nerve irritation and pain. The final outcome and goal would be to return the patient to their prior level of function.
